What Is a Credit Union — and Why Does It Matter?
A credit union is a member-owned financial cooperative. When you open an account at Corning Credit Union, you don't become a customer — you become a part-owner of the institution. Every member has one vote, regardless of account size. The board of directors is elected by members, from the membership.
This structure changes everything. Commercial banks answer to shareholders who want profit maximization. Credit unions answer to members who want better rates, lower fees, and service from people who live in the same community they do. In 2026, that difference translates to: 4.75% APY savings versus the national bank average of 0.46%; auto loans at 5.99% APR versus 8.06%; credit cards at 12.99% versus 22.77%.
Corning Credit Union is insured by the NCUA — the federal agency that insures credit union deposits the same way the FDIC insures bank deposits. Your money is just as safe here. Your money simply earns more. Learn more at NCUA.gov.
Our History: 88 Years of Member-First Banking

Corning Credit Union was established to serve employees of Corning Incorporated and their families. The founding charter had 23 members and $340 in deposits. The mission: provide affordable financial services to working people who were being underserved by commercial banks.
Expansion to Steuben County
Membership eligibility expanded to include all residents and employees of Steuben County, growing CCU's potential member base from a few thousand to over 90,000 people. Total assets surpassed $10 million for the first time.

CCU joined the CO-OP ATM network, giving members access to thousands of surcharge-free ATMs nationwide. The first electronic account access service launched — the predecessor to today's online and mobile banking platform.

CCU launched its full online banking portal, enabling members to manage accounts, transfer funds, and pay bills entirely digitally. Mobile check deposit launched the following year. By 2014, over 40% of CCU transactions were completed digitally.

Why Members Choose CCU Over Larger Banks in 2026
In 2026, Corning Credit Union conducted its annual member satisfaction survey. The results were clear. The three most cited reasons members prefer CCU over commercial banks are:
- Better rates on savings and loans — cited by 84% of members as "the primary reason" they joined or stayed
- Local loan decisions by real people — cited by 71% of members as "significantly better than their previous bank"
- Feeling valued as a person, not a transaction — cited by 68% of members as "a meaningful difference in how I'm treated"
These aren't metrics we invented to look good. They're what our members told us when we asked. We share them because we think transparency is part of what a member-owned institution should do. You have the right to know what 68,000 people think of the place you're trusting with your financial life.
